As we gear up for winter and the temperature drops, especially if this is your inaugural winter paddling season, you might be wondering: How can I brave the chilly waters? It may seem daunting, but trust me, winter is prime time for paddling progress.

Here are some straightforward tips for conquering winter paddling:

  • Check the Weather: Always keep an eye on the air temperature of your paddling destination and dress accordingly.

  • Layer Up: If it's under 12°C, layering is key. Opt for a hat or beanie to keep the heat in. With windchill, add booties and long pants. A long-sleeve top is a must-have.

  • Embrace the Layers: In the 8-12°C range, layering becomes even more crucial. Life jackets are not just for safety; they can also keep you warm. Consider wearing a long-sleeve thermal under your paddling shirt for extra warmth. I swear by my yellow Ziko paddling shirt for its balance of warmth and breathability. And if you find yourself overheating, simply remove your hat or beanie while keeping those booties on.

  • Battling the Chill: When temperatures dip below 8°C, it's time to bundle up even more. Layer up with an extra long sleeve if needed. Poggies, those paddle-attached gloves, are a lifesaver in single-digit temperatures, providing much-needed relief from frostbite while maintaining your grip on the paddle.

  • Invest in Quality Gear: It might seem like a splurge, but investing in high-quality gear, like the Enth Degree range stocked by Mario, is worth every penny. When you're out on the water and feeling frozen to the core, you'll be thankful for gear that keeps you warm and comfortable.

And always remember, you'll warm up quickly once you start paddling!

Happy winter paddling, folks! And let's be grateful we're paddling in Sydney, not the chillier waters of Victoria or Tasmania.
